Nurses in New South Wales sent a message to the federal government outside the Productivity Commission's public hearing in Sydney.

Aged care registered nurses, enrolled nurses and assistants in nursing were joined by community groups, retired union members and public health nurses outside the Productivity Commission hearing in Sydney recently.   The nurses and concerned community members sent a message to the Productivity Commission to put the 'care' into 'aged care' and ensure their final report has residents at the centre of aged care.

The NSW Nurses Association with members and community groups are calling for:

  • More funding by the federal government to improve wages of nurses in aged care;
  • Minimum nurse and assistant in nurse to resident ratio's in nursing homes in NSW;
  • A national licensing system for all direct care staff in aged care;
  • Accountability of funding;
  • Ensuring that quality care of residents is the focus of the Productivity Commission final report.
